This winter Andalucía experienced one of the wettest Christmas' in 60 years and many homeowners in Spain found themselves battling with floods and water damage over the festive period. If you are a home owner in Spain and have suffered loss or damage as a result of the storms, your Spanish insurer may have advised you that your claim is not covered under your policy and that you must make a claim to the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, also known as ‘the Consorcio'.

The Consorcio acts as an insurer for Spanish risks (such as your home in Spain) in the event of extraordinary and unpredictable occurrences, for example extreme weather conditions. In many cases insurers leave it to the policyholder to make their claim to the Consorcio. This process can be particularly difficult if you are not familiar with the system especially if you are not a Spanish speaker. You may find that if you do not follow the correct procedures when making a claim you could be under compensated.
