Road Deaths increase during 2018 in Portugal

21-Jan-2019

Data from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) indicate that 513 people died in road accidents in 2018, three more than in 2017, registering a rise for the second consecutive year in the number of deaths.

The Minister of Internal Administration stated that a zero tolerance intervention in road safety will be established in 2019 following the road accident data recorded in 2018.

'We are not satisfied with these results. The absolute priority, identified at risk zones, will be a strategy of zero tolerance and political monitoring of what is the operational activity in these areas at risk, "he added.

"We have had three more fatalities than in 2017, which does not leave us satisfied, but mobilises us to establish a zero-tolerance intervention as an absolute priority in this area," said Eduardo Cabrita.

The Minister stressed that "the absolute priority will be to work municipality to municipality in the identification, mobilising the intervention of the security forces in articulation with the local structures so this increase is reversed in 2019".
