Whether you have holiday home or a permanent one, it is important to take preventative measures while you are elsewhere, to reduce the risks. Here are few tips to follow:

  • Lock all doors and windows.
  • Keep valuables out of sight. Maybe you will keep the shutters down but if not then move valuables away from prying eyes.
  • Unplug appliances that do not need to be connected to the mains while you are away. Unless it's for a very long time it is likely that you will keep the fridge & freezer on but disconnect everything else.
  • Set your alarm on before you leave the house;
  • Make sure you turn off the water safety tap if you go away on holidays or for a weekend;
  • Don't comment with strangers that you will be away and for how long and, if possible, don't post photos on social media of your holiday before you return. You can always ask the police on their rounds to check the condition of your home, or a known neighbour or a relative.
  • Make sure your lawns kept short and gardens well maintained. Especially if you live in an area that’s prone to rural fires. Cut back trees and shrubs overhanging to buildings.
  • Check your insurance policy. Are you covered for loss or damage if you are away for more than a certain number of days? Do you have all risks cover for certain valuables and possessions that you take away on holiday with you? Are there security conditions attached to your policy?
