For a few expats, moving to Spain means leaving their motoring days behind so they can sit back and relax. However, many more are eager to retain the use of a vehicle while they’re living in this beautiful country. Not only does keeping a car allow you to pop away to one of Spain’s fabulous tourist destinations but it also means that you can stay mobile within your own community. Spain sometimes has rainy days too, so the need for a car – while often unexpected – isn’t something that’s going to go away!

Some people baulk at the idea of a buying a car in Spain but are uncertain of whether they can bring their own vehicle from the UK or even how to do so. The good news is that importing your UK registered car is totally possible and the better news is that it’s much easier than you’d expect.

A resident of Spain with a UK registered car will need to register it with the Spanish authorities. This is usually unproblematic. A recent traffic act has also come into force that requires a driver to have their vehicle fitted with Spanish plates within 30 days of official importation or 3 months if you are not a resident.

In addition to completing the registration process, you should make sure that you take advantage of the cover provided by an efficient car insurance provider in Spain. Ibex Insurance Services has an unparalleled network of over 200 agents and brokers, all of whom understand the intricacies of Spanish car insurance terms and will ensure you are provided with appropriate cover and receive competitive rates.

Of course, you must keep your car in a good roadworthy condition and part of the rematriculation process involves passing the ITV (Spanish equivalent of MOT). At Ibex, we do not need you to produce this document but you are required to make sure that your vehicle remains roadworthy. Not doing so can prejudice a claim. If you simply ensure that you maintain the same level of care for your car in Spain as you did in the United Kingdom, and pass the ITV when required, that should keep you problem free and safer in the long run.
