The European Commission has given Portugal two months to inform it about the transposition into national legislation of the directive on motor insurance that reinforces the protection of victims of road accidents in the European Union (EU).

The new rules, set out in Directive (EU) 2021/2118 and which should have been transposed by December 23, 2023, clarify the scope of protection for victims, facilitate the control of mandatory car insurance and create a compensation mechanism in the event of insolvency of the responsible insurer.

The directive, according to a statement, also makes it easier for policyholders to change insurers, ensuring equal and non-discriminatory treatment of claim declarations.

In addition to Portugal, 16 other Member States received notification letters, with a period of two months to report compliance with transposition.
